His Eminence Dungse Namgay Dawa Rinpoche is son of Kyabjé Dungse Shenphen Dawa Norbu Rinpoche. He has been recognized as a reincarnation of Garwang Sangye Dorje, one of the main teachers of Kyabjé Dudjom Rinpoche, Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje. He was enthroned by Kyabjé Dudjom Rinpoche himself, who blessed him and predicted his future. He has received teachings and initiations from H.H. Karmapa, Tulshik Rinpoche, Chatrul Rinpoche, Penor Rinpoche, Muksang Rinpoche, and his father Kyabjé Dungse Shenphen Dawa Norbu Rinpoche.
